Feel the Love, Not the Arthritis

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is in the air – but for many of us so is the cold which can often exacerbate arthritis. We can’t control the weather, but we can do much to control our joint pain from arthritis. As we celebrate love in February, we challenge you to celebrate your body and show it some love! If you suffer from arthritis, here are 5 easy ways to love your body:

1. Massage

Heat up some mustard oil and and grab your Valentine for a romantic, therapeutic massage. Massage is a great way to feel pampered and the oil will stimulate blood flow, which helps with inflammation. Make this part of your routine all month and your body will certainly feel the love.

2. Ginger

Ginger is a great, natural anti-inflammatory. You can use ginger oil directly on your joints or eat a little raw ginger with every meal to help your body with blood circulation and make your heart happy.

3. Cold Compress

Whenever you curl up on the couch to watch a romantic movie this month, cool things down just a bit with a cold compress. Wrap up a bag pag of frozen peas in a towel and apply directly to any problem joints. The cold will reduce swelling and can numb your arthritis pain.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another way you can love your body is with a little something you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet – apple cider vinegar. Not only is it full of helpful minerals like magnesium, calcium and phosphorus, it also helps remove toxins from our joints! Try putting a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water and let it work its magic.

5. Epsom Salt Bath

What’s more soothing than a hot bath with candles and soft music? Throw 2 cups of epsom salt in that warm water and your joints will love you. The magnesium from epsom salts will help your body get the right pH balance and reduce the acid that can cause arthritis, and the heat from the bath will stimulate blood circulation. If you really want to get into the Valentine’s spirit, put your epsom salt in a plastic bag, add a few drops of red food coloring and your favorite essential oil to make it look and smell like a lovely soak at an expensive spa.
